Renovation of St. Michael the Archangel's Chapel at Old Orthodox Cemetery completed

The St. Michael the Archangel's Chapel in the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel Cemetery in Sarajevo has undergone renovation. The chapel had been in a dilapidated state for quite some time, and the repair was done as part of an initiative by Prosvjeta, a Serbian Orthodox cultural society.

This religious and cultural-historical monument is also known as the Chapel of the St. Vitus' Day (Vidovdan) Heroes, and it preserves the memory of the centuries-old Orthodox cemetery in the Sarajevo neighborhood, Donja Hiseta.

The Sarajevo Assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir apparent took place on June 28, 1914. This is St. Vitus' Day, an Orthodox holiday, so the assassins were proclaimed St. Vitus' Heroes, and they were buried in a common grave in Sarajevo on July 7, 1920.

The Holy Archangel Chapel, which was dedicated to them, was built exactly 19 years later, in 1939.
