Signage Project for Nine Sarajevo Bridges Now Underway

In the coming days, the process of placing tourist information signs on nine of Sarajevo’s bridges will be complete. This represents the final activity of the PHOENIX – Culture for the Future Project, which has been financed by the EU and implemented by the Municipality of Stari Grad Sarajevo, the Zone of Improved Business (ZUP) Baščaršija and the Sarajevo Navigator Foundation.

As part of the project, the following bridges will be labeled: Kozija Ćuprija, Šeher-ćehajina Ćuprija, Latinska Ćuprija, Drvenija, Festina Lente, Ćumurija, Skenderija, Suada and Olga Bridge (Vrbanja) and the Ars Aevi Bridge.

The aim of these activities is to present Sarajevo’s cultural-historical heritage to both Sarajevans and visitors, while placing an accent on the symbolism of Sarajevo’s bridges, which have been connecting both river banks, different cultures and various time periods….

The signs will include a pictogram and a short history of each bridge, along with QR Codes, which will help interested visitors access more detailed texts about the bridges quickly and easily. The texts can be found on the comprehensive web portal, Destination Sarajevo (www.destinationsarajevo.com).

The signage project has been made possible through cooperation with the City of Sarajevo, which serves as the Miljacka River authority, as well as with approval from the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, which operates under the FBIH Ministry of Culture and Sport.

The PHOENIX – Culture for the Future Project has been running for 18 months and is part of the Sarajevo 2014 Program, which received funding from the EU in marking 100 years since the beginning of the First World War. The goal of the program was to spread a message of peace, reconciliation and solidarity from Sarajevo to the rest of the world.
