Dug in 1993 beneath the runway of the Sarajevo Airport, the Sarajevo War Tunnel served as the only connection the besieged city had with the outside world until the end of the war.

For two and a half years, this 800-meter-long tunnel, which is a little over a meter wide and 1.5 meters high, made it possible for Sarajevo to have access to food, electric energy, medical supplies, fuel, weapons….

About 20 meters of the tunnel, along with the houses that connected to it on the Hrasnica side, later became part of the Tunnel of Hope Museum. The permanent exhibit documents the Siege of Sarajevo, which lasted 1,425 days – the longest-running siege of any city in modern history.
