Top events in Sarajevo from November 15 to 21

The pre-holiday period in Sarajevo is buzzing with many interesting events and guest appearances by international and regional artists, musicians, chefs…., and here we recommend events taking place from November 15 to 21 that you should attend.

If you’d like to escape the holiday crowds and get a head start on your gift buying for the special ones in your life, be sure to visit SCC, where the Autumn Urban Mix Market (Nov.13-16) will be held. Here you can find various handicrafts and interesting items that are produced locally.

The city is full of interesting educational events, so if you are interested in the history of letter writing, typography and calligraphy, don’t miss the promotion of the book, Osnove Oblikovanja Pisma (The Basics of Type Design), by Frank E. Blokland and Nikola Đurek. The promotion will be held on Thursday, November 15 at the Academy of Fine Arts as part of the Pop-Up Festival.

Or, if you prefer painting, then that same day be sure to head to the concept shop, Kutcha, where you and other arts lovers can enjoy a creative game with colors during the painting workshop.

If you’re in a dilemma as to where you could have some fun with the little ones, we recommend the Kids’ Fair at KSC Skenderija (November 16-18). The Sunnyland ice skating rink will open at Skenderija as part of the largest party geared toward youngsters, and, in addition to the other fun events going on, there will also be interesting products for kid.

If you’re fascinated by Japanese art, don’t miss the exhibit of Tohoku handicrafts, as organized by the Embassy of Japan in BiH. The items will be on display at Vijećnica from Friday, November 16 until Friday, December 7.

Another exhibit will be opening on Friday at ODRON Gallery, on Radićeva Street. The event here is the big group exhibit entitled “Either-Or” by young local artists, both affirmed and those who are new to the scene.

If you love stand-up comedy, be sure to visit Chamber Theater on Friday or Saturday for An Ordinary Evening, a terrific performance art show by popular Serbian actor Milan “Lane” Gutović. For more than a decade now, Lane’s performance has had audiences laughing in Moscow, London, Beijing and on Broadway…. In a unique way, he describes himself and current social issues.

If you’d like to close out Friday with some good music and dance, Jazzbina is preparing an evening of blues with the  Blues Train; German DJ  Alex Niggemann will be performing at Silver & Smoke, andCinemas Sloga will be organizing its concert,  In Memoriam of EKV. The band, which includes former members of the very first EKV ensemble, will remind us of the great works by this Belgrade rock group.

The weekend is the time for a good dinner and some wine, so we recommend that all the gourmets out there visit 4 Sobe Gospođe Safije for the gastro event, Autumn at Safija – Wine & Dine, which will be held on Friday (Nov. 16) and Saturday (Nov. 17). Top Croatian chefs Ivan Milićević, Toni Klarić, and Resident Chef Ivan Zmijarević will preside, and there will be wines from Croatian wineries, Volarević and Rizman.

Sports lovers will enjoy the water polo tournament at Otoka Olympic Swimming Pool on November 17 and 18.

If you are a fan of healthy food, don’t miss the Plant-based Diet Workshop with Maja Volk. This event is set for Saturday, November 17 at the vegan concept store Zdravo.

On Saturday, the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra will be giving another terrific concert at the National Theater, and we also recommend the gig by the rock group Domino Efekt at Yu Caffe.

Sunday, November 18 is the perfect day to take a walk around town and then finish by visiting Dom Mladih, where the outstanding Croatian cellist, Ana Rucner, will be giving a performance. She will be joined by the young music star Marko Bošnjak.

On Monday, November 19 – and every Monday throughout the month of November during Museum Month – be sure to visit the Historical Museum of BiH from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. for a free guided tour through the exhibits and collections.

From Monday, November 19 all the way up to December 18, at Trg Djece Sarajeva you will have a chance to view the exhibit by the European Network for Remembrance and Solidarity (ENRS). This traveling exhibit, After the Great War, contains more than 200 multimedia components: photos, maps, films and personal items, all of which talk about the consequences of the First World War.

The Annual ULUBiH Exhibition is the big arts event that awaits you at Collegium Artisticum Gallery (running from Tuesday, November 20 until Sunday, December 2). This is one of the most visited arts manifestations in BiH and includes the following forms of visual arts: drawing, painting, sculpture, graphic design, installation, photography and video.

On Tuesday, students from South Korea will be ringing in the holiday spirit with the musical called The Christmas Miracle, so be sure to attend this musical-dance performance for all ages, at Dom mladih.

And Meeting Point Cinema is the address for those interested in architecture, design, urbanism and spatial planning. The popular event, Architecture Nights, will be held here on Wednesday, November 21.
