Top Events in Sarajevo from October 18 to 24

This week (October 18-24) will also see many interesting events being held in Sarajevo.

The Festival of Cultural Diversity, which is being held as part of the project, The (In)Visible: Cultural Rights of National Minorities in BiH, will include Sarajevo Sherlock, a two-hour walk (Thursday, Oct. 18) that tells the story of cultural heritage and individuals who have contributed to the development of our city.

This Thursday, the Austrian Embassy in BiH will be organizing a concert at Mash by the Austrian band, Die Wandervögel – Wandering Birds, which brings old Austrian and German folk songs, as well as Jewish songs sung in Yiddish, to life.

That same evening, enjoy the sounds of jazz with the French band, AutorYno, at the popular Jazz club, Jazzbina. The band will be playing again in front of Sarajevo audiences at SARTR (October 20), as part of Jazz Fest Sarajevo.

Jazz also awaits you at the restaurant, 4 Sobe Gospođe Safije, where you can enjoy a performance by the 4 ROOMS Quartet over some great wines and culinary specialties. Quartet members include some terrific Sarajevo musicians: Darko Poljak, Dinko Šimunović, Elvir Bandić and Bojan Ahac.

Sarajevo Wine Weekend will be held on Friday and Saturday (October 19 & 20) at the Home of the BiH Army Hall (Dom Armije), where you will have a chance to sample fine wines, and this two-day event will wrap up on Saturday with a big party at Coloseum Club and the Lezz Go Band.

Friday is the time for dancing, so on October 19 you can choose between two parties: the one being held at Silver & Smoke, where Sarajevo DJ Bonjasky and the Italian electronic duo, Qubica, will be performing; and the party at Trezor, with DJ Keith Carnal from Amsterdam.

Saturday, October 20 is the ideal day to head up to the mountains and participate in the volunteer activity that involves planting saplings on Mt. Bjelašnica with members of the Let’s Do It movement. Volunteers may gather in front of Zetra Olympic Hall, where transportation to Bjelašnica will be provided, along with necessary materials and tools for planting.

On Saturday, October 20, football lovers can follow the match between FK Sarajevo and FK Sloboda at Koševo – Asim Ferhatović Hase Stadium.

That same evening, the international oriental dance show, Revival, will take place on the stage at the Center for Culture and Youth (Jelićeva Street). The show features the Awalim Dance Company, which is comprised of 15 dancers from around the region.

If you love opera, there is another spectacle for you to watch at Kamerni Theater 55 on Saturday – live HD streaming of the opera, Samson and Delilah, by the New York Metropolitan Opera.

That same evening, you can enjoy a classical music concert at the National Theater by the outstanding Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra, with Bartosz Zurakowski from Poland conducting.

And you can close out the evening at Jazzbina with Tom Waits songs, as played by the great tribute band, Rain Dogs.

On Sunday, October 21, visit the Historical Museum, to see the exhibit, How Much is a Migrant Worth?, which will be on display until Tuesday, October 23. This exhibit tells the story of migrants, today’s national minorities, illustrating the significant contribution they have made to our heritage and the development of our society.

Kinoteka BiH, which has an archive of many film classics and masterpieces of the seventh art, will be showing a series of movies by American director Alen J. Pakula (October 22-26).

Members of Helem Nejse, the creative Sarajevo group that has become popular for its radio show of the same name, will be performing its satirical play, Sarajevo Days of Terrorism, on the stage at Kamerni Theater 55 on Monday, October 22.

Satire also awaits you on Tuesday, October 23 at the National Theater, where you can watch the controversial play, The Constitution, by Croatian director, Vinko Brešan.

The three-day Sarajevo Tourism Festival starts on Wednesday, October 24 at KSC Skenderija. The theme will be gastro tourism, so, in addition to other interesting activities, you will also be able to try some traditional foods and beverages, and enjoy the diverse program, which includes the International Cup for Chefs, Pastry Chefs and Bartenders, as well as many other events.

Wednesday is the perfect day to visit Sarajevo galleries, so be sure to see the exhibit, Reset, a collection of works of art by Tuzla artist Merima Ibrišimović at Java Gallery; as well as the exhibit of works by Fikret Libovac, Nusret Pašić and Tatjana Milaković at the city gallery, Collegium Artisticum (which runs until October 30).
