While the heat of July can be oppressive, Sarajevans find relief up on the nearby mountains and at various picnic spots, where temperatures are pleasant, thanks to the high elevation, and there is the deep shade of the forests and a refreshing coolness from rivers and streams.

It’s also relaxing to enjoy a stroll or bicycle ride along Velika Aleja in Ilidža, which leads to the fascinating nature park, Vrelo Bosne (the source of the Bosna River).

Ramazan, the holy month of the Islamic calendar, will fall in July this year, and Sarajevo will take on a special atmosphere at that time.

This month will also see the First Annual Sarajevo Ramazan Fest, which aims to present Islamic culture and the beautiful customs associated with Ramazan.

Visitors might find it interesting to head up to Žuta Tabija around the time of sunset. This fortress used to serve as part of Sarajevo’s defensive walls and today there is a canon that is fired during Ramazan to mark the time of iftar, or the breaking of the fast, which lasts from sunrise to sunset.
