Sarajevo Ramadan Festival is happening during the month of Ramadan. The aim of the festival is to present the beautiful traditions of Ramadan and the richness of Islamic art and culture.
Žuta (Jekovačka) Tabija is the central location for the festival. During Ramadan, a cannon is fired at maghrib (sunset) from this spot to show the time of iftar, the breaking of the fast, which lasts from sunrise to sunset.
During the festival, a number of events – concerts, exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, etc. – is happening at other venues.
The Sarajevo Ramadan Festival was created by the Sarajevo Navigator Foundation and the Zone of Improved Business (ZUP) Baščaršija in order to enhance the tourist offering of Destination Sarajevo.
The festival programs are part of the PHOENIX – Culture for the Future Project, which is funded by the EU and implemented by the Municipality of Stari Grad, ZUP Baščaršija and the Sarajevo Navigator Foundation.
The PHOENIX – Culture for the Future Project last for 18 months as a part of the Sarajevo 2014 program, which has also received funding from the EU in marking 100 years since the beginning of the First World War I, all with the aim of sending a message of peace, reconciliation and solidarity from Sarajevo to the rest of the world.
