Journey to YU (in the footsteps of Rebecca West) is a photo-documentary by Deirdre Mulrooney, inspired by award winning photographer Dragana Jurisic exhibition “YU: The Lost Country”.
It follows the footsteps of writer Rebecca West’s epic 1930s travelogue to her former homeland, Yugoslavia, “Black Lamb and Grey Falcon”.
In her photographic pilgrimage, Jurisic brings West’s masterpiece into the present day for an encounter with the medium of photography. This photo-documentary highlights this unique and original road-trip where two women from different eras intersect in an intellectual, emotional, and physical journey through the Balkans.
Deirdre Mulrooney is a documentary maker, writer, and dance historian. Among other festivals, her films have been selected for Galway Film Fleadh, Lincoln Center NYC Dance on Camera Festival, Guth Gafa International Documentary Festival, and broadcast on RTE (Irish National TV, and Radio). Deirdre’s book Irish Moves was published by The Liffey Press in 2006 and her 2002 book on German choreographer Pina Bausch (her PhD), was recently published as an ebook. She is currently working on a book on Erina Brady; a radio documentary on George Yeats, (wife of WB Yeats) for RTE Lyric FM, and a film project on neglected Irish Modern Dancers.
