The excellent Sarajevo restaurant, Avlija, opened in 1997 and at one time it really did use to be an avlija (courtyard) in the family house of Fikret Karkin, the owner of the restaurant.

It was the famous BiH architect, Amir Vuk Zec, who designed it and managed to masterfully retain the authentic atmosphere, while giving it a totally new function.
On your first visit, when you come to the blue, wooden door with the engraved, red heart on it, you will certainly be pleasantly surprised by what awaits you as you walk through the door – a restaurant in a courtyard with a glass-covered roof; with lots of greenery, rustic features and photographs of old Sarajevo; cobblestones and wooden tables and benches that are covered with colorful, traditional tablecloths.
In one word, it is a true Bosnian avlija – hidden from view, it’s as though it has been made for spending a long time in the company of friends, in a comfortable atmosphere and with excellent food.
In addition to various appetizers, pastas, salads and meat dishes, Avlija has long been known for its chicken wings, fritters and delicious crêpes.
We highly recommend that you go to Avde Sumbula 2, pass through the blue, wooden door and experience, for yourself, the atmosphere of wondrous Avlija!
