The Igman-Bjelašnica Ski Center manages sports and recreational activities on the mountains, Igman and Bjelašnica, both of which are located about 30 kilometers southwest of Sarajevo.
This ski center has three ski areas – Veliko Polje and Malo Polje on Igman and Babin Do on Bjelašnica. Sporting events for various disciplines were held on both mountains during the XIV Winter Olympic Games.
During the last war, Igman and Bjelašnica saw heavy fighting, leaving the installations in all three areas largely destroyed. It was only after the war that partial reconstruction was carried out.
Fifteen of the original 39 Nordic Ski Lanes are in operation on Igman’s Veliko Polje and there are also three alpine skiing lanes for children. During the summer, this area is a top spot for those who love mountain biking.
Malo Polje is dominated by its two ski jump tracks (with heights of 70 m and 90m), which were badly damaged during the last war and are no longer in use. This venue is also home to six ski lanes reserved for children and one for adults. During the summer months, the area around the ski jump installations serve as sports fields for football, bowling and volleyball.
Babin Do is the largest of the three ski areas and the only one that offers some infrastructure for artificial skiing and night skiing. This ski area comprises eight ski lanes and five lanes for children, as well as seven lifts that take visitors all the way to the very top of Bjelašnica (2,067 m). During the summer, it’s possible to rent the courts for tennis and mini football.
