This religious and cultural-historical monument is also known as the Chapel of the St. Vitus' Day (Vidovdan) Heroes, and it preserves the memory of the centuries-old Orthodox cemetery in the Sarajevo neighborhood, Donja Hiseta.
The Sarajevo Assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir apparent took place on June 28, 1914. This is St. Vitus' Day, an Orthodox holiday, so the assassins were proclaimed St. Vitus' Heroes, and they were buried in a common grave in Sarajevo on July 7, 1920.
The Holy Archangel Chapel, which was dedicated to them, was built exactly 19 years later, in 1939.
